Brandon A. Boyd


Dr. Brandon A. Boyd is the Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of  Music, conducting the MU University Singers and Choral Union Symphonic Chorus while teaching various choral conducting and music education courses. He previously conducted the MU Glee Club (Tenor-Bass Choir). Dr. Boyd’s commitment to community-building through choral singing is evident in his research pursuits, which include initiatives such as organizing choirs for the homeless and exploring the impacts of choral singing on senior citizens. Notably, he co-directed three choral community partnerships in Florida, fostering musical collaborations with diverse groups, including middle school students and incarcerated women.

As an active composer and arranger, his music is sung regularly by ensembles throughout the United States and abroad. He is also the curator and editor of the “Brandon A. Boyd Choral Series,” a choral series with Hinshaw Music Publications helping promote exciting and innovative works composed by both established and new composers and arrangers. His music also appears in the catalogs of Gentry Publications, Hinshaw Music Company, MorningStar, GIA, and Kjos Music Press. In addition, he is the Executive Choral Editor of Gentry Publications.  

Internationally, Dr. Boyd has worked in the orchestral realm, serving in various roles with esteemed ensembles such as the London Symphony and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Germany. He prepared the NDR Elbphilharmonie Vokalensemble for Maestro Alan Gilbert for multiple productions of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, in Hamburg and Kiel, Germany. He has also conducted and performed with renowned orchestras and choirs in the United States, including the Nashville Symphony, Missouri Symphony, and the St. Louis Symphony, with multiple appearances at Carnegie Hall as guest composer, conductor, and pianist.

Dr. Boyd’s dedication to musical education extends beyond borders, as evidenced by his guest faculty roles and conducting engagements in Bolivia, facilitated by partnerships with the Universidad Católica Boliviana – San Pablo and the Universidad Evangelica. Additionally, he has served as Composer-in-Residence and Community Engagement Leader for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, premiering commissioned works and organizing initiatives like the Interfaith Community Shelter Street Choir.

He holds two degrees from Florida State University (Ph.D. in choral music education and M.M. in choral conducting) and earned a B.S. in music education (emphasis in piano) from Tennessee State University. He is a proud member of the Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity, Inc., Pi Kappa Lambda, American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM), American Guild of Organists (AGO), and Chorus America. Dr. Boyd also serves as a member of the National ACDA Composition Initiative committee.
